Fabio Saggin
Executive Secretary (Brazil)
Hello to all viola lovers,
I'm truly delighted to have been invited to join the board of the International Viola Society.
I was born and completed my undergraduate studies in Brazil before moving to the United States for specialization, where I earned my Master's and Doctoral degrees. Afterward, I returned to Brazil to share the knowledge I gained and contribute to the development of new generations of violists.
My first International Congress was in 2022 in Columbus, GA. There, I had the opportunity to meet so many other viola enthusiasts from around the world. It was an incredible and extremely enriching experience.
Currently, I serve as the principal violist of the Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the First Secretary of the Brazilian Viola Society (ABRAV) and President of the International Viola Society's Youth Section (IVS Iuventus).
My involvement in the Brazilian viola community dates back to my participation in the First Violists' Meeting at UFRGS in 2012, while I was still an undergraduate student. In 2015, I participated in the 1st National Violists’ Congress, which also hosted the 1st National Viola Competition of Paraíba, where I won first prize. In 2020, while living in the United States, I became more closely involved with ABRAV, initially as part of the fiscal council. Since my return to Brazil in 2022, I've actively participated in organizing the National congresses, primarily in programming and the selection committee for papers to be presented at the events. I was actively involved in organizing the 49th International Viola Congress held last year in Campinas, again both in programming and paper selection. During the event, I was responsible for assisting wherever necessary. Another contribution to ABRAV was the organization and execution of the 2nd E-CONNVIO (National Online Viola Competition), where I also had the role of presiding over the judging panel. I also served on the evaluation committee for the ABRAV Journal (a single edition to date). Additionally, I edited and published two works that are freely available on the Society's website. I'm currently working on a catalog of Brazilian works for viola, which will be included on the new ABRAV website.
I hope to be able to help the IVS with projects aimed at developing the viola in the musical scenario, both by rediscovering and exploring new repertoire.
